Astigmatism is an optical condition where the curvature of the cornea is not the same in all directions (i.e. more curved in one direction than the other) like a football. Most prescriptions have some astigmatism. In the prescription: +4.00 -100 X 090 the first number or Sphere power (+4.00) and its sign is determined by the patient being nearsighted (minus sign) or farsighted (plus sign). The second number (-1.00) is the amount of astigmatism and the third Number (90) is the axis of the difference of curvature (astigmatism). The axis can be from 1 to 180 degrees.
